Church Recorders

Stratford–upon–Avon has an enthusiastic group of church recorders carrying out this fascinating work. It involves making records, listing and describing everything inside a church as it stands today. This is carried out under the headings of: memorials, metalwork, stonework, windows etc. Photographs and drawings of some items and features of the inside of the church are also included to help with the description.

Early in 2019 the church recording group began working at St Lawrence`s Church, Mickleton. Our group now has 10 members who meet once a month at the church to research and record the many and varied artefacts that have accumulated over the centuries. The church is set in idyllic surroundings and is well worth visiting.

When the record is completed copies will be handed to the Church, Gloucestershire Records Office, the V&A and English Heritage. The records are a valuable resource available to all concerned with the management and preservation of church heritage .

2019 sees the completion of the 2000th record made since the Arts Society [formerly NADFAS] came into being.

The group usually meets once a month in the church, working in pairs to measure, describe and document the contents. Basic computer knowledge is pre-requisite.

Study/training days are also held locally on the various subjects when we have the opportunity to meet up with members from other groups working in the West Midlands Area.
