The Arts Society opens up the world of the arts to everyone.
Here in Stratford-upon-Avon, we offer an exciting programme of monthly lectures on subjects ranging from archeology to watercolours, gardens, music, tapestries – and much more. Our lectures are given by first-class speakers who excel in their chosen field, and our venue is the Stratford Playhouse in the centre of town, on Rother Street.
STRADFAS was founded in March 1972: we added an afternoon lecture session in 1986.
We have no waiting list, and we do not have a joining fee.
Please note that if you have arrived here and wanted to connect to the Stratford-upon-Avon Art Society (a Society for active painters) then click on this link to go to their website.
STRADFAS also run two Days of Special Interest each year, where you can listen to (usually) three in-depth lectures on special subjects.
There are Day Visits by coach to places of great interest, such as art galleries, exhibitions, or historic houses and gardens, and STRADFAS arranges extended cultural Tour(s). Examples of destinations include Sicily, Suffolk, Devon, Provence and Northern Italy. Ticket sales days (which are Lecture Days) are listed in the Membership Card, in the monthly email bulletin, and on our website. The tickets normally sell out very quickly. The tickets on sale are allocated to the morning and afternoon lectures in the ratio of our am and pm members, with a maximum of two tickets per member, and for members only. Non-members can ask to be put on a waiting list in case an event is undersubscribed.
You may wish to look at our cancellation policies.
Our Society has a membership of over 500, and because the Play House has a large capacity, we are lucky enough not to have a waiting list. Our Lectures are given twice, in the morning and afternoon; you join as a morning or afternoon member (there is more space in the afternoon). Our members come from a radius of about 25 miles around Stratford.
Our annual subscription is £45 (2019-2020) for ten lectures each year, starting in September. Tickets for all extra events and trips which we organise are sold at our lecture meetings. STRADFAS members receive a copy of the quarterly magazine, the The Arts Society ‘Review’, and can obtain discounts at certain galleries and exhibitions.
Membership forms can be downloaded from this website.
For those coming as a visitor (see below) to see what we do, there is a suggested donation of £7 per lecture.
You may also join our Society upon arrival at any of our lecture sessions.
Each year we have a coffee morning for new members (many of whom will be new to the area) and, although we are a big Society, we pride ourselves that we are both warm and welcoming.
Joining part-way through the year: Visitors
We do not have any reduction of our subscription for those joining part-way through the year. This is because STRADFAS pay a fixed-amount annual capitation fee to The Arts Society for each of our members, irrespective of when they join, and how much subscription they have paid. Instead, we offer the opportunity to come as a visitor for as many times as you wish, for a suggested donation (see above) per lecture.
Those coming as visitors should also note that our full members have preference for booking onto Trips and Special Interest Days, which normally sell out quickly.
Membership of The Arts Society
Members are also issued with an Arts Society card. This is included in your membership pack and entitles you to certain discounts and entry to local and national Arts Society events which are listed in the quarterly Arts Society ‘Review’, which all members receive (one copy for a couple).
