Atkinson Grimshaw – Master of Moonlight

By Alexandra Epps

This Victorian artist created some of the most beautiful and atmospheric paintings. This lecture explores his depiction of rain, mist, moonlight, gaslight, city streets, winding lanes, grimy docks and the River Thames. He seems to clothe them in poetry and mystery. His unique vision earned him the title of the “Master of Moonlight” as he repeatedly transformed the humdrum of everyday Victorian life into a magical “Grimshaw.”
