From Cradle to Grave: The Iconography of the Nativity in late Medieval Italian Art

This lecture explores the Nativity icon from Orthodox East and its actual meaning. Late Trecento art is also examined and its differences highlighted. The talk traces the fascinating development of the image of the Nativity from its Byzantine roots to the devotional images of late fourteenth century Italy.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Helen is an M.A. graduate of the Courtauld Institute and has worked in the museum sector at London’s Russian Art Auction House and at Christie’s. Her interdisciplinary lectures weave together art historical scholarship, technical expertise and devotional context to provide a unique way of understanding 13th-14th century panel painting.
